A few minutes later, a bicycle skids to a halt. It's Missy, out of breath, her helmet crooked.

Sheldon does not pray. He pulls a small notebook and a golf pencil from his pocket. Under the buzzing security light, he begins to write. "Hypothesis: The probability of a successful marriage can be modeled using a decay function. Variables include: financial stress (high), incompatible religious fervor (increasing), and the introduction of an external male with a bowling jacket (unknown, but likely significant). Conclusion: The system is unstable. Further observation required." He looks up. The church's stained-glass window of Jesus knocking at the door feels accusatory. Sheldon knocks back on the air. "I am not the one who needs saving," he says to the night. "I calculated the odds of this trip ending badly. They were 87.4%. No one listened." A few minutes later, a bicycle skids to a halt
