"Friends? Café? In my day, bahus didn’t have 'friends.' They had duties. Go inside and change into a saree. Then you can go... to the temple."
Velamma is sitting on her favorite living room chair, sipping chai. Her expression is smug. Across from her, her new daughter-in-law, Radhika (the younger, modern bride), is trying to sneak out of the house in a pair of jeans and a crop top. Instead of getting angry, she smiles
Radhika reluctantly changes into a heavy silk saree. As she steps out, Velamma 'accidentally' trips her with her walking stick. Radhika stumbles, and the saree’s pallu tears on a nail Velamma had 'forgotten' to fix.
