The immediate, intuitive assumption is that Earth’s distance from the Sun dictates our seasons. If we are closest in January, logic suggests it should be sweltering summer across the entire globe. Yet, for those living in North America, Europe, and much of Asia, January is the heart of winter. This paradox lies at the heart of understanding perihelion: the seasons are not a product of distance, but of tilt. To grasp perihelion, we must first abandon the idea of a perfectly circular orbit.
