Upon release, the film was a modest success in Japan but a major television and theatrical success in India, where it was dubbed into Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu. Indian critics praised its visual grandeur and accuracy. However, some Hindu traditionalists objected to foreign involvement, though this was muted by the involvement of Arun Govil and the court-mandated oversight.
The film’s origin is unusual. In the 1980s, Japanese director Yugo Sako, inspired by India’s cultural richness, proposed an animated Ramayana to promote Indo-Japanese friendship.
