The word Swalath (صلوۃ) means "salutation" or "blessing upon the Prophet." Nariyath refers to the locality or family lineage associated with the poem's author or popularizer. The poem is attributed to Sayyid Muhammed al-Aydarus ibn Sheikh Abu Bakr al-Aydarus (commonly known as Nariyath Thangal or Nariyath Sayyid ), a renowned Sufi saint and scholar who lived in the 19th–20th century. He belonged to the Ba 'Alawi sada family (descendants of Prophet Muhammad) and settled in Nariyath , near Kozhikode (Calicut) , Kerala.

His maulid and swalath compositions are deeply revered in Kerala's traditional Islamic circles. The Malayalam text of Nariyath Swalath is written in Arabi-Malayalam – Malayalam language written in the Arabic script (with additional diacritics for Malayalam sounds). In modern times, it is also transcribed into standard Malayalam script for easier reading. nariyath swalath malayalam text
