Metro is ultimately a film about waiting. Waiting for a promotion, waiting for a phone call, waiting for a spouse to come home, waiting for the courage to leave. The Metro rail is the perfect metaphor for this existence: predictable, punctual, but utterly indifferent to the individual. Anurag Basu’s masterpiece does not ask us to judge the characters’ moral failings. It asks us to recognize them—because in the crowded, air-conditioned compartments of our own lives, we have all been passengers on that train.
