Alex’s stomach dropped. He had just paid his quarterly premium two weeks ago. How could he owe money? He called the WSIB hotline. After 22 minutes of hold music (a tinny flute rendition of "Clair de Lune"), he got Brenda.
Alex wanted to scream. He couldn't lose this contract because of a $447 reconciliation from two years ago. On Thursday morning, with 24 hours left, Alex drove to the WSIB regional office in the industrial part of town. No appointment. He sat in a plastic chair next to a man holding a hard hat and a manila folder full of crumpled invoices.
"I know you’re busy," Alex said, sliding over his payment confirmation, his Notice of Assessment, and a printed copy of the NexGen RFQ. "I need a certificate by 5 PM tomorrow. I have two employees. If I don't get this, they don't get their bonuses this year."
