She smiled, and it changed her whole face. She wasn’t pretty in a magazine way, but she had a light behind her eyes, a sharp, amused intelligence that made Leo feel like a bug under a magnifying glass.

His phone buzzed. Marge.

Leo’s hands stopped trembling. For the first time in years, he wasn’t running. He was exactly where he was supposed to be.

The door opened before he knocked. The woman standing there was… a lot. Not fat, exactly. More like she took up space in a way that physics struggled to explain. She had a wide, kind face, hair the color of dried hay, and an apron dusted with flour.
