Alex’s target was his childhood. Specifically, 2008. His parents' basement. A worn-out beanbag chair. And the beat-up Xbox 360 that raised him. He reached out and touched the "Games" blade

He opened his eyes. He was sitting on that carpet. The one with the coffee stain shaped like Florida. The air smelled of stale pizza and the particular plastic warmth of a CRT television. But the TV was a ghost; the source of light was the EMU-VR’s holographic interface, a shimmering green grid overlaid on reality.

“No,” he said. He triggered his special move.
