The Last Frame
The original JPEG was almost black—a nighttime shot, maybe a malfunctioning flash. In the darkness, you could barely make out a car’s dashboard, a highway sign, a hand gripping the wheel. The .AAE file, however, contained extreme instructions: exposure +4.0, shadows +80, clarity +100, and a strange, custom tone curve that boosted reds and crushed blues.
To this day, if you dig into AEon’s source code, you’ll find a comment in the XML parser: “If exposure > +3.0 and location metadata contains ‘Crater Lake,’ show the user a warning: ‘Some edits reveal what cannot be unseen.’”
Tucked under its keyboard was a yellowed sticky note: “Works. Photos inside. Use AAE Viewer.”
